Vegan Sambal Belacan

Welcome to The Kampung Vegan. My name is Elliz and this is my very first post here, yay! I have to say I’m super excited to share this recipe with you today. What better way to kick off this website than with something simple and fast: Vegan Sambal Belacan! This sambal is the perfect accompaniment to every meal. It’s spicy, flavourful and hits all the right spots. I can honestly say I can’t go a meal without having this on the side!
Belacan is not a vegan product but you won’t miss it at all in this recipe. To imitate that flavour, I added a little bit of roasted seaweed in here to bring back that toasty, umami flavour.
Serve this with a side of ulam and enjoy!

- Grind the roasted seaweed and salt together in a mortar and pestle to a fine powder.
- Add the other ingredients in and pound. It's best to do this in stages as it is easier to pound a small amount of ingredients at a time.
- Lastly squeeze the calamansi lime juice into the sambal and stir through to incorporate.
- Do a taste test and adjust what you need according to your preference!
